Happy Birthday, Millie!   1 comment

Today is Millie’s first birthday! I can hardly believe it! I keep thinking “this time last year…” and fill in the blank. It’s 1:27 pm as I write this. This time last year, we were finally getting settled in the labor and delivery room (after spending an hour in triage while the nurses and doctors debated whether or not I was really in labor— they couldn’t pick up my contractions on the monitor so they weren’t convinced that Millie was really on her way!) and I was asking for my epidural.

I have been pretty teary today. I am not sad that Millie is 1 year old. I’m thrilled! It’s been such a fun year and we’ve really enjoyed each milestone of Millie’s babyhood. Still, I am crazy emotional— I am just overwhelmed with gratitude. I am thankful for such a sweet baby girl. I’m thankful for the 12 weeks I got to spend at home with her. I’m thankful that’s she’s been healthy and happy. I am thankful that I’ve been able to live my dream of being a mother and I am very much looking forward to whatever will come next!

Nate and I wanted to share our favorite moments from Millie 1st year. Feel free to leave a comment with your favorite, too!

Nate: One of my favorite things about Millie is the joy she brings to everyone she meets. I have far too many favorite moments to mention but many of them are her meeting friends and family members for the first time. One of the most meaningful was our trip to Vegas last summer to meet Millie’s Great-Great-Grandmother. I can’t wait to show Millie the pictures of her sitting on Great-Great-Grandma’s lap and telling her how much all about the trip and how much her Great-Great-Grandma loved her.

Julie: My favorite moment was early on. April 30, 2011 at 6 am. Nate and I spent our first night as parents in the hospital and things still didn’t seem quite real. Millie made some adorable squeaky noise and Nate went over to the basinet where she was sleeping, picked her up and sat down with her. I sat there, staring at him while he stared at her, and I have never felt happier in my life. I feel like every wonderful moment from the past year just reminds me of that first special  moment— feel so lucky to have 2 amazing loves in my life.

We are planning to celebrate Millie’s birthday with some family next Saturday, so you will get more birthday details then, but today, it’s just the 3 of us. Happy birthday, Millie!

Fun with Water   Leave a comment

I posted this picture on Facebook and I wanted to give a little explanation behind it. Millie loves to play in water. She frequently crawls over to Major’s water dish and happily splashes around in it. It grosses Nate out BIG TIME. I wanted to let her play with water, but I didn’t want her to keep going after the dog’s dishes. So, the other night I filled up some containers with water so that Millie could play with water in a non-gross way. SHE LOVED IT. She started with 3 containers and quickly dumped all of the water out of the smallest bowl. Then she would gently stick her hands in the two remaining bowls before dumping a second bowl of water all over the place. The largest container was full of water for the longest time (about 4 minutes) before Millie flipped it over, sending water all over her and the floor. It was so fun watching her play. She kept looking at the water and containers and seemed shocked each time she ended up being soaked after she dumped a container. I think she is really going to enjoy playing with water this summer. She was too little to go swimming last year, but we may have a water baby this year.

Princess Baby Research Scientist   4 comments

Millie has a ton of nicknames. I think I’ve mentioned it before. We call her Mils, Millie Lou, M’Lou, Lou, Louie, Mimi, Mia, Girl, Girl-girl, Darryl (it would take too long to explain). We started nicknaming her before she was even born, so I’m not shocked by the number of names the girl has. But I am shocked by another name that came about. Before she was born, I remember saying “I do not want a little princess-y diva” and I swore I’d never call her princess. I didn’t want her to act like a spoiled little princess or annoyingly girly-girl. Then, one day, I said it. I think it happened when I first went in her room to wake her up: “Good morning, princess.” I just can’t help but call her that! Still, Nate talked to me about it and said, maybe we should call her “scientist” instead in an effort to try and (gently) encourage her toward the math and science fields. So, a new nickname was born: Princess Baby Research Scientist. Say it out loud. Maybe it sounds awkward at first, but after the second or third time saying it, it rolls right off the tongue. Ok, maybe it still sounds awkward, but regardless, it is now an official Millie Louise Keyse nickname.
